I Love Candy Corn

I love candy corn! I especially love to make candy corn beads out of polymer clay. It is so easy and so fun. But be careful – if you make it right, it looks good enough to eat.

Candy Corn Beads

I haven’t yet perfected the recipe, but this is what I used (all colors are Premo):

yellow – 1 part yellow, 5 parts translucent
orange – 1 part orange, 5 parts translucent, 1/4″ ball of pomegranate
white – 1 part white, 20 parts translucent.

I did not take pictures of creating the cane, so here are my directions. To make the cane, I cut two strips of yellow on the bottom, two strips of orange in the middle and one strip of white. I then shaped the strips into a triangle, keeping the yellow full width and shaping the white into a point. After shaping the cane into a triangular shape, reduce it. Then cut off the edges of the triangle so that the triangle is smaller. Slice the triangle into 1/4″ sections and use your fingers to soften the edges so that the triangle resembles candy corn.

Cadmium yellow and turquoise make some great colors. And they are much easier to portray onscreen than pinks and reds. Here they are:

This are the tiles that I created from the colors yellow and fuchsia. Unfortunately, it is very hard for me to accurately portray the red and fuchsia hues. So neither this or the swatches I created look right to me. However between the two pictures, you can get an idea of the progression from cadmium yellow hue to fuchsia.

Simply Black and White

One of the things that has frustrated me over the last couple of years is mixing colors – the second time around. Usually, I create a color in the same way that a cook – a little bit of this and a little bit of that until it comes out right. Which is great, until you need to make more of the same color. So, I am trying to take a more structured approach to color and color combinations. I started out just playing with different colors, but decided that I needed a more organized system. I am starting with two colors mixed together in various proportions. After that, I will work on more complex color combinations. First up – black and white.

Because of the difficulty of capturing the actual colors in a photograph, I am also creating color swatches that match the polymer clay tiles. Of course, the color also depends on the screen of your computer as well, so these are really estimates of what the colors look like.

My favorite techniques include using a lathe to create pens and other items and using a bezel and resin to create pendants and other jewelry. I also enjoy mixing colors to create new color combinations.
